‘May I speak with Chief Inspector Hook please. Tell him it’s Lord Kit Aston,’ said Kit. He hated to throw his title in, but it was sometimes necessary to cut through any resistance. Sure enough a minute later a familiar voice came on the line with an equally familiar mordant response.

‘This is an honour your lordship. I hope you can see that my forelock is being well and truly touched.’

‘Cut the wisecracks Hookie, you know why I said it,’ said Kit. The initial tone of levity gave way to a more serious mood. ‘We need to meet.’

This was greeted with silence at the other end of the line. Then Hook finally relented.

‘I’ll see you at the race course. Usual place.’

The line went dead.

Kit put the phone down and went in search of Gerry. He found him down at the paddock, viewing the horses being led out. Worry lines creased the side of his mouth. There was no question his friend was deeply concerned about what would happen next.

‘I am going into Newmarket to meet Hookie.’

‘Thank you Kit,’ said Gerry. ‘I suppose it’ll be like old times for you with him.’

‘Almost,’ said Kit, half smiling but not really joking.

‘I suppose. It’s different now. When you’re in it up to your eyes,’ said Gerry with a frown. He turned and looked Kit in the eye. ‘Kit, this could ruin us. If something is suspicious about Teddy’s death then I don’t know how owners will react. They may not want their horses to be trained here and it’ll take Glory to come up trumps in the Derby otherwise they may not want to breed with him either. Will you help us? Will you help clear our family of any hint of suspicion?’

This was an unusually long speech by Gerry’s standards. It showed Kit just how much was at stake for the family. It affected everyone now, not just Carol. Kit nodded to his friend and patted him on the arm. He said, ‘I’ll do what I can Gerry. There’s only one thing that I ask.’

‘Name it, Kit.’

‘You cannot lie to either myself, or to Mary, or to Hookie. Any attempt at deception will only make matters worse. You must see that now. If Hookie hadn’t found out that you and Chris went to see Teddy then Chris may not have had to go and see him while the press were parked outside your house or at the police station. Everything that happened matters. We just don’t know yet how it all fits together. We may never have the full picture, but we cannot have anything withheld from us.’

Gerry nodded. Then they started to walk away from the paddock towards the stables.

‘I’ll have one of the jockeys run you into town to see Hookie.’
